Agenda

Commercialization of University Research: Role and Challenges of Business Schools

Research commercialization refers to the conversion of academic research outcomes into marketable products, services, or processes. This process encompasses idea generation and research development, intellectual property protection (such as patents), technology transfer (including licensing and startups), business development (such as creating business plans and securing funding), and marketing.

Although there is a split among academics regarding the role of commercialization in universities, administrations and governments have reached a consensus: in a scenario where inadequate government funding is the norm, universities must pursue alternative revenue streams through research commercialization. Faced with these challenges, other Faculties are turning to the Schools of Business for assistance, but are they prepared and capable of providing it?

Results from a survey and ongoing initiatives at the DeGroote School of Business and McMaster University will be presented.

The session will act as a platform to explore initiatives from various institutions, emphasizing the role that Business Schools can have in aiding and promoting the commercialization of university research.

  • Elkafi Hassini, Associate Dean of Research, DeGroote School of Business (speaker and moderator)

The purpose of these events, are to provide a forum where business schools research leaders, from schools across Canada, can discuss topics of mutual concern, share ideas and exchange perspectives.

The meeting is open to faculty members who serve as Associate Deans of Research, or equivalent Research Leaders, in BSAC member schools. Deans and Directors are also welcome.
